A STRAIGHT STICK

"The best way to show that a stick is crooked is not to argue about it
or spend time denouncing it, but to lay a straight stick alongside it."
- D.L. Moody

Whether or not I personally exemplify such a characteristic, I'm always challenged by those who have a noble concept of human potential, owing to the touch of God within each of us. Many of these quotes come directly from the hearts of men and women of deep character. I hope you find that they "rattle your cage" as they do mine...

Cynicism is not realistic and tough. It's unrealistic and kind of cowardly because it means you don't have to try.
- Peggy Noonan

You must do as well as you can whatever God gives you to do; that is the best possible preparation for what he may want you to do next.
- Thomas Chalmers

Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.
- Victor Hugo

When arguing with a fool, always make sure that he is not similarly engaged.

I have been driven to my knees many times by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.
- Abraham Lincoln

If the blind put their hand in God's, they find their way more surely than those who see but have not faith or purpose.
- Helen Keller

If you have so much business to attend to that you have no time to pray, depend on it that you have more business on hand than God ever intended that you should have.
- D.L. Moody

A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.

Character is what you are in the dark.
- D.L. Moody

I will not permit any man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.
- Booker T. Washington

"At its core, bravado is insecure, jealous and self-protecting. Legitimate talent recognizes its own innate riches and does not object to sharing."
- adapted from a quote by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

"A sharp tongue sometimes cuts it own throat."
-Jim Scancarelli

"Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you."
-Robert Fulghum

"The best climber in the world is the one who's having the most fun."
- Alex Lowe (professional mountaineer)

"It is better to sleep on things beforehand than lie awake about them afterward."
-Baltasar Gracian

"Time is the best teacher; unfortunately it kills all its students."
- Unknown

"We have all been placed on this earth to discover our own path, and we will never be happy if we live someone else's idea of life."
James Van Praagh

"Superstition is the dark side of wonder."
Dean Koontz
